Encaustic is an ancient painting medium using melted beeswax and damar resin which together form a fluid painting medium. The word encaustic comes from the Greek word Enkaustikos , meaning 'to burn or burn in '. Heat ( blow torch ) is used to fuse each layer of the wax medium to the one laid down before it thus building up multiple layers to create the artwork. The wax can be coloured using oil pigments to give rich, vibrant colours and mixed media can be incorporated into artworks.
